South Asian Heritage Month
South Asian Heritage Month
South Asian Heritage Month, observed annually from July 18 to August 17, has the theme "Roots to Routes" for 2025. This theme emphasizes the connection between South Asian heritage and the journeys, both literal and metaphorical, that individuals and communities have taken to arrive at their current circumstances. It encourages reflection on the past, the present, and the future, acknowledging how our origins and experiences shape our identities.
South Asian Heritage Month is a reminder to us all that heritage is not just about the past... It's about how those stories empower us to create safer and stronger futures.
The month encourages us not only to embrace cultures through art, food, music and storytelling - but also to listen to the lived experiences of South Asian families and communities who have carried traditions, hopes and resilience across generations.
At PEGS, we know that culture, heritage and identity can have a huge influence on how families experience and navigate Child-to-Parent Abuse (CPA). Support isn’t always one size - fits all, it must be trauma-informed and respectful of each person’s lived experience. Thats why here at PEGS we signpost and work with some of the most incredible grass roots, specialist organisations such as:
- -Yuvanis Foundation in Oldham, whose Women’s, Youth, and Men’s Hubs provide community wellbeing services rooted in cultural understanding, bridging gaps with fitness, peer support and belonging.
- -The South Asian Heritage Trust, whose “Roots to Routes” celebrations and creative programming empower individuals and communities to share their journeys with pride and resonance.
- -The Sharan Project founded in 2008 is a U.K based charity providing support and advice to vulnerable women, particularly of South Asian origin, who have been or are at risk of being disowned due to abuse or persecution.
- -
Southall Black Sisters highlight and challenge all forms of violence against women and girls, empowering them to gain control over their lives & assert their human rights to justice, equality and freedom.
This month shows just how powerful connection can be, especially when it’s rooted in heritage and shared across generations.
In 2024, Polly Harrar Founder, CEO of The Sharan Project wrote a piece ’The hidden truth of child to parent abuse within South Asian families’ which you can read by visiting here.
If you'd like to share your heritage story response to “Roots to Routes,” or highlight any other organisations who have done any vital work this month, we’d love to listen at: media@pegsupport.com
