A Foster Carer To A Foster Carer: This Foster Care Fortnight

Foster caring is an incredibly rewarding but also demanding journey. It requires immense patience, resilience, and the ability to show up for children and families in need, often when they’ve been through very difficult experiences.

Seeing a child thrive and grow because of the support and care you provide can be one of the most fulfilling parts of being a foster carer. There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from making a real difference in a child’s life, especially when they might not have had a stable or supportive environment before.

However Foster care can be emotionally and physically draining. Between managing challenging behaviours, dealing with complicated family dynamics, and meeting the child’s emotional needs, it can feel very overwhelming at times. Taking care of your own mental health is essential.

It's not easy, and there will be tough days, but your persistence and commitment are invaluable. It’s important to remember that progress can be slow and sometimes hard to see, but your efforts are always making a difference, even when it doesn't feel that way.

As a foster carer I know it is normal to feel scared, especially when faced with the unknown, whether that’s the emotional trauma of the children you're caring for or the complexities of the system. But every day you show up, you're helping create a brighter future for those children.

At the end of the day, you are making an amazing difference, and it’s important to remember that you don’t have to do it alone. There are support networks, both formal and informal, that can help you cope with the hard days and celebrate the good ones.

From every foster child, thank you your amazing.
