Child to Parent Abuse and Financial Abuse
New Workshop: Understanding Financial Abuse within Child to Parent Abuse (CPA)
We’re excited to introduce our new workshop, designed to provide a safe, supportive and confidential space for parental figures to explore financial and economic abuse within Child to Parent Abuse (CPA).
We understand that conversations about money can feel deeply personal and emotionally heavy - especially when they involve our own children. From the start, this session prioritises safety, choice and compassion. There is no pressure to speak or share, and just attending is a powerful step in itself. Financial abuse in CPA is a reality for many families, with at least 82% of parents supported by PEGS report experiencing this form of abuse - from our 2025 survey
One parent PEGS supports shared how
"The abuse has even cost me my job. I was forced to miss shifts and eventually had to resign, which has left me struggling financially and emotionally."
This workshop aims to explore these experiences, offer understanding, and provide tools for support, helping parents regain confidence with financial safety.
What does the workshop cover?
The session gently guides us through:
- What financial and economic abuse is, including how it shows up within CPA, and not just adult relationships
- How control, guilt, coercion and fear can shape financial decisions in families
- Real-life examples of financial abuse, explored through anonymous reflection and discussion
- The emotional impact of living with financial pressure, debt, dependency and fear
- Healthy financial relationships between parents and children - what they look like and why they matter
- Practical steps for regaining financial safety, control and autonomy
- Support options, including how banks, services and organisations like PEGS can help
You are supported to reflect privately and at your own pace, with opportunities for gentle group discussion throughout the session.
How it’s delivered
- Delivered virtually (through zoom) with links and details posted in our closed Peer Support group.
- Facilitated by an experienced PEGS CPA Practitioner with a specialism in finance
- Trauma-informed, non-judgemental and grounded in lived experience
- Includes reflective questions, guided discussion and practical guidance
Why this workshop matters
Financial abuse within CPA is often normalised, minimised or misunderstood. Many parents don’t recognise it as abuse until the impact becomes more noticeable, from debt, fear, isolation, and loss of independence.
This workshop helps people name what’s happening, understand that they are not to blame and begin rebuilding financial confidence in a way that feels realistic and supportive.
