Train with PEGS

Why Training with PEGS is Crucial for Addressing Child to Parent Abuse (CPA)

Child to Parent Abuse (CPA) is a complex and often misunderstood issue that impacts families across various settings, including homes, schools, and social services. PEGS (Parental Education Growth Support) is at the forefront of supporting professionals to better understand and respond to CPA, providing invaluable training programs that empower individuals and organisations to make a difference.

Here’s six reasons why training with PEGS is a game changer for professionals:

1. Specialised CPA Knowledge

PEGS focuses exclusively on CPA, an area of domestic abuse that is frequently hidden and often goes unreported. Our organisation's deep expertise ensures that participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence, signs, and impacts of CPA. PEGS’ courses are designed to shed light on both the emotional and psychological dynamics of parent-child relationships, offering insights grounded in research and practice. Professionals come away with a stronger grasp of how CPA manifests in different environments and what support can be provided for those with lived experience.

2. Tailored Tools and Practical Skills

PEGS goes beyond theoretical knowledge by offering practical tools that professionals can immediately implement in their day-to-day work. Whether you're a teacher, social worker, healthcare provider, or law enforcement officer, PEGS provides you with actionable techniques for supporting CPA situations.

For example, our PRAM© (PEGS Risk Awareness Model) training equips professionals with tools to recognise CPA patterns and respond safely and effectively. This training is essential for equipping professionals with the tools necessary to create a safer and more supportive environment for families facing CPA.

3. Customisable and Sector-Specific Training

One of the unique benefits of training with PEGS is the organisation’s commitment to tailoring training programs to the specific needs of different professional sectors. Recognising that each field faces distinct challenges when dealing with CPA, PEGS offers customised training modules that speak directly to your organisation’s unique context.

Whether you work in education, health services, law enforcement, or social care, PEGS provides training designed to help you support CPA cases effectively in your specific role. These tailored sessions address the daily challenges professionals face, and even offer shorter awareness talks if needed, ensuring that no matter your time constraints, you can still access the training necessary to enhance your work with CPA-affected families.

4. Collaborative and Research-Informed Approach

PEGS places a strong emphasis on collaboration, partnering with leading professionals across sectors to create a community of shared learning. Our work with a vast range of agencies ensures that our training reflects the latest developments in research and practice. By learning with PEGS, professionals can benefit from shared knowledge and contribute to the growing body of understanding around CPA.

Training programs are constantly updated with new case studies, research findings, and feedback from professionals in the field. This commitment to staying at the forefront of CPA response allows PEGS to deliver not only the most up-to-date information but also methods that have proven successful across various real-world contexts.

5. Supporting Policy Development

PEGS doesn’t stop at individual training. We also offer employer support for organisations looking to develop or refine their CPA policies through our Child to Parent Abuse Employer Covenant. Whether your team is just beginning to address CPA or has already established procedures, PEGS can assist in creating comprehensive, evidence-based policies that reflect best practices. By working with PEGS, professionals can contribute to long-lasting, institutional change that enhances both awareness and response capabilities within their organisations.

6. Positive Impact on Families

At the core of PEGS' mission is the goal to support those experiencing CPA in a compassionate and effective manner. By investing in professional training, participants are better equipped to offer meaningful support to affected families. Whether it's guiding parents towards support resources or responding to disclosures of difficult incidents, the skills gained from PEGS training make a tangible difference in family outcomes.

Training with PEGS is an investment in both professional development and community wellbeing. With our vast expertise, practical tools, and customisable approaches, PEGS empowers professionals across various sectors to effectively address CPA.

If you're a professional working with families affected by CPA, or if you simply want to expand your knowledge in this crucial area, consider training with PEGS. By training with PEGS, you’ll not only advance your own skills but also play a key role in helping families overcome one of the most challenging forms of domestic abuse.

Child to Parent Abuse organisation founder awarded MBE The founder of a social enterprise which has supported thousands of parents impacted by abusive behaviours from their children has been awarded an MBE. Michelle John, originally from Pembrokeshire in Wales but now based in Shropshire, was among the names announced for the prestigious accolade in the King’s Birthday Honours List this year. In 2020, Michelle set up not-for-profit organisation PEGS with the aim of supporting parents and carers, training professionals, influencing local and national policy, and raising awareness of Child to Parent Abuse – which is thought to affect up to one in ten households in the UK. Since then, she has grown a team of experts who have trained police, social workers, teachers and many other professionals to better recognise the signs of CPA, support parents, and signpost to specialist organisations. In addition, Michelle set up a range of parent-focused initiatives including daily practitioner-led online sessions, a Facebook peer support group which now has 3,300 members, and one-to-one offerings for those at highest risk. PEGS launched a CPA Covenant for employers in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, only the fourth such covenant to be backed by the Government, and Michelle has advised everyone from the Home Office to Channel 4 and the BBC on CPA – the latter for storyline on Hollyoaks and EastEnders. Her work has seen CPA covered by journalists across television news programmes, national newspapers and magazine, and regional press and radio, and she’s received numerous awards both in the UK and internationally. Michelle, whose MBE was awarded for Family Support and Advocacy, said: “This honour is also shared with the parents who have trusted me along the way: they drive me, inspire me and I will always stand with them. “I feel proud, privileged and very grateful – and I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me and PEGS along the way. There is much more to come for PEGS, and we will continue to work every day for the parents and carers who have been or continue to be impacted by CPA. “There is so much to reflect on from the journey of the last six years, and there have been many highlights and challenges along the way. I am sure there will be many more in the future – although being told I’d received an MBE will always remain a truly incredible moment that I’ll remember forever!” For more information about us, visit www.pegsupport.co.uk or search for 'PEGS' on social media!
